“The Zayed Sustainability Prize is the UAE’s pioneering global award in sustainability and a tribute to the legacy of the late founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

This annual award recognizes and rewards the achievements oF impactful, innovative, and inspiring sustainability solutions.”

Students at the Eastern Mediterranean International School in Israel, have proposed a student-led initiative in engineering, called Project Oasis, that aims to collect electricity and water from the air, simultaneously. The system accomplishes this using organic Rankine cycle and condenser technology.

They aim to produce 6 kilowatts of energy and 1,000 liters of water every day with zero infrastructure for every machine that is built. Ultimately, the school plans on mass producing these machines to significantly reduce global water shortages and provide clean water and energy in impoverished areas; all while being carbon neutral in operations. The solution will continue to deliver benefits to students at the school for the next 50 years.”

The project was assisted by Dr. Bob Roach and created by our Physics students Merrick Richers (Canada), Joseph von Weizsäcker (Germany), Felipe Pinho ( Brazil ), George Ishaq (Palestine), Ekaterina Vragova (Russia), Emmanuel Eliphase (Tanzania), Maharjan Raj (Nepal), Valerian Feigin (Israel), Artem Knyazev (Kazakhstan), Newton Khunvongsa (Laos), Basel Naamneh (Palestine), Sambhav Man Tuladhar (Nepal), and Deiv Mico (Albania).

Humans of EMIS is a documentary that tells the perspectives of 8 young students who belong to a unique international community and are constantly exposed to conflict. It is a mosaic of human experiences that attempts at shifting the focus from big narratives to personal stories when dealing with conflict. The universal message of this project is that at the end of the day, even if we all have different backgrounds and unique experiences, we all share the same human emotions of fear, hope and love.
Humans of EMIS was a fully student-run project, led by Jaime Musso (Italy/Germany, EMIS ’20) in his gap year at EMIS. The documentary premiere was conducted in two sessions, one for an external audience and the other for the EMIS community. Both shows were followed by a panel discussion with the students that created the documentary. The documentary will soon be available for streaming online and will be accompanied by shorter individual stories of the Humans.

EMISers embarked on their Jerusalem Journey on the last day of January to discover the city from religious, alternative, sustainable, socio-political, cultural, and entrepreneurial aspects. At EMIS, we often talk theoretically about our mission, but during our mission weeks we put theory into practice and explore its manifestation in reality. This year, we are investigating the overarching theme of communities, the first-hand experience of which we believe is best explored in Jerusalem. Thus, we decided to set off on a special Jerusalem Journey. To get ready for this experience, we had multiple preparation days and tours, both for the leading staff and the students, that allowed us to explore the tour themes and gain a greater understanding of the nuances of the city. After various talks and activities that examined the all the different aspects and specialties of the city, EMIS students and staff were ready to start the practical part of their journey. Five different buses set off to Jerusalem on Thursday morning, carrying our students and staff to locations all over Jerusalem. From visiting the UNTSO headquarters, through meeting a gypsy community, to listening to an ultra-orthodox transgender spiritual leader, the members of our school saw the full extent of Jerusalem’s uniqueness and complexity. This journey not only allowed EMISers to obtain in-depth insights and a greater understanding of the city, but also gave them the opportunity to form a tight bond with Jerusalem.

Green Up is the environmental platform at EMIS that focuses on education and awareness, activism and promoting sustainability, as outlined in the EMIS mission.

Green Up, together with the student organization Green Team, works to address climate change, sustainable food production, waste management, industrial sustainability, ecological resource management, biodiversity, and more.

Green Up was born from the shared motivation of EMIS, the Kfar HaYarok, and the students themselves to increase sustainable practices on campus, and develop education about environmental issues, sustainable development and global cooperation. The ‘Green Up’ name originated as a set of activities run by the student club, the Green Team, to create opportunities to involve more students in building solutions for local issues.

Green Up places students at the center of their own learning experiences, allowing them to discover what motivates them, where their strengths lie, and what gives them a sense of purpose in the world.

Today, with thanks to the Beracha Foundation, Green Up has expanded to become an effective platform for students, staff and associates of EMIS and the Green Village to contribute to environmental sustainability from the local to global context.

Our Aims

  • Provide students with the necessary tools and methods to become environmental leaders;
  • Engage students in the practice of various forms of advocacy and activism to solve environmental challenges, outside the classroom;
  • Motivate and enable students to make change in their home communities;
  • Create a network of young activists and practitioners, with connections to environmental and social organizations and schools around the region and the world;
  • Increase environmental awareness among EMIS and Green Village staff and students;
  • Establish long-term, on-site sustainability projects that will reduce harmful environmental impacts.

Green Team

Green Team is a student-run organization (CAS) who leads sustainability initiatives on campus and around the world, working in close cooperation with the Green Up platform.

Current focus areas in 2020 include: sustainable food production, reducing food waste, managing solid waste (recycling), fast-fashion and reducing dependence on a mega-polluting industry, and biodiversity and nature conservation.

Our recent events include designing a garden and learning about permaculture, environmental movie nights, planning an online conference, organizing a fast-fashion awareness event and clothing swap.

Education

At EMIS, we focus on educating students and staff members about environmental issues that affect our world today, including climate change and global warming, water management, waste, food waste, biodiversity and other topics.

We annually host EMIS Earth Weekend on the Earth Day, and host experts from the region to give talks, such as Prof. Alon Tal (Tel Aviv University) and Prof. Yoav Yair (IDC Herzliya).

One of our most exciting activities was educational trip to Kibbutz Ketura and Kibbutz Lotan, where we visited the largest solar field in Israel and learned to build ecological structures from straw bales and mud.

Activism

2017-2019:

  • Green Team organised a recycling system at EMIS and carried out a campaign encouraging students to reduce food waste.
  • Outside of EMIS, we cooperate with Greenpeace and other organisations. Last year, we took part in the  “Break Free from Fossil Fuels” campaign and this year, we went to the Climate March in Tel Aviv.
  • EMIS Earth Weekend we went to the city of Netanya to clean the beach and visit the sea turtle reserve.

2020

  • Continuation of campaigns to implement recycling and composting systems on campus.
  • Environmental and Leadership training sessions for Green Team members.
  • Organizing an event to raise awareness about fast fashion and the detriments of the fashion industry on the environment.
  • Getting EMIS students involved in gardening, to promote self-sufficiency and practice food production activities that minimize impact on climate change.

Campus Garden

At EMIS, we learn about and practice the latest innovations in the sustainable food production. Making use of space between campus buildings, in 2018 we installed garden beds nearby the dormitories to grow our own herbs and vegetables. We also installed a hydroponic system, a highly water-efficient agricultural system which grows plants in water. In fall 2020, we have embarked on a big project to create a large community garden in an un-used open field behind the school. In order to make the lowest ecological footprint possible, we collected discarded wooden pallets and treated them in order to  build “upcycled” garden beds. We are planting winter-friendly vegetables and herbs, as well as designing spaces that will encourage the community to spend time in the garden.

Social Media

Support

Thank you to the Beracha Foundation for their generous support for the academic year 2020-2021, allowing the expansion of our activities to effectively address climate change, improve resource management, and engage the future generation in activism and advocacy.

THE JERUSALEM PROJECT WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION OF THE APPLEBAUM FOUNDATION COMPASS FUND & BERACHA  FOUNDATION

Leaving academics aside, all EMIS staff and students packed their bags and set out on a three-day mission to investigate Jerusalem. The students were split into 12 groups, each exploring a different aspect of Jerusalem’s complexity: civic status, religion, arts, holy places, political views, urban planning, sovereignty, economic development, education, borders, municipality, and the green line. This project aimed to broaden the students’ horizons and their understanding of the many different faces of Jerusalem.

This year, the EMIS Project topic that was chosen was Jerusalem.

The first day was spent touring the different sites of the city, and attending a panel in which an Israeli and a Palestinian representative held a political discussion about Jerusalem on stage, and answered questions asked by the students. The second day was wholly dedicated to the 12 group investigations conducted by the EMISers, who spent the day walking around the city, mingling with locals, and hearing lectures from professionals in Jerusalemite firms and the Hebrew University. All the students regrouped in the evening and were addressed by a Jerusalem Venture Partners executive about the economic development in the city and by the Office of the Quartet Chief of Staff on the political involvement of the Quartet in the region. On the third day, the students attended a problem-based discussion workshop at the Eucalyptus restaurant and the different investigation groups presented their experiences from the previous day following a grand Middle Eastern meal. Tired but happy, the staff and students boarded the buses for the last time and returned to EMIS, satisfied and enlightened by the magic of the holiest city in the World.

As part of our “hands-on” approach at  EMIS,  students and staff participate in an annual week-long project, which focuses on a theme that connects to the school’s mission. This year’s project was dedicated to borders. During the last week of January 2018, the EMIS community traveled in groups to explore the country’s beautiful borders. This project week was overseen and planned by the students of EMIS and was a complete success. Students and staff members visited Israel’s borders with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza, Egypt, and the West Bank as a way to ‘break down the borders’ surrounding their new home. During Borders Week, students met Israeli and Palestinian activists, politicians and members of the public to learn about the complexities of our region, as well as the obstacles to peace and possible solutions. The week concluded with the whole school gathering in the Judean Desert, close to Masada, where students led workshops and reflection sessions on the experiences of the week.
